Diemžēl mūsu labais projekts par ‘taureņu, putnu un bišu pļaviņu’ pie Forward Steps nav iemantojis vērtētāju uzmanību un nav apstiprināto skaitā, tomēr mēs neatsakāmies no idejas un paši saviem spēkiem centīsimies to īstenot pavasarī!

Kad nāks pavasaris, mums ļoti noderēs palīdzīgas rokas, smaidīgi darītāji, kā arī kāda savvaļas ziedu sēklu paciņa. Kopā mēs varēsim izveidot brīnišķīgu un mājīgu dabas stūrīti mūsu bērniem!

‘What we are proposing:

We are proposing to establish an educational “Butterfly, Bee, and Bird Meadow Corner” (approx. 2×2 metres) on the premises of the Forward Steps Family Resource Centre in Tullow. The project includes:

Preparing the soil and planting a mix of native Irish wildflower seeds (pollinator-friendly species).

Installing a bird bath and decorative wooden borders to create a dedicated biodiversity zone.

Installing a small outdoor bench for nature observation and outdoor lessons.

Installing trilingual educational signage (in English, Irish, and Latvian) explaining the importance of pollinators and local ecosystems for children and visitors.

Why the project is needed:

Loss of Pollinator Habitats: Local pollinators (bees, butterflies, and insects) are facing habitat loss, making urban and community wildflower patches critical for their survival.

Need for Hands-on Environmental Education: Local children and community members in Tullow lack accessible, interactive outdoor learning spaces where they can observe biodiversity firsthand.

Integration & Multicultural Community Engagement: As a joint initiative between the Diaspora Latvian language and culture school and Forward Steps, there is a strong need for shared green spaces that promote environmental care, social inclusion, and cross-cultural collaboration.

The environmental challenge being addressed: The project directly addresses the decline of local pollinators and biodiversity loss in urban/semi-urban areas. By converting a currently unused space into a native wildflower patch, we address the shortage of natural forage and shelter for native bees, butterflies, and birds, while promoting eco-friendly gardening practices (avoiding pesticides and supporting natural ecosystems).

How the project supports climate action and/or environmental enhancement:

Biodiversity Enhancement: Sowing native Irish wildflowers provides nectar and pollen for pollinators, enhancing local biodiversity in the heart of Tullow.

Ecosystem Support: The addition of a bird bath and natural planting creates a safe haven for local wildlife.

Climate Awareness & Education: Trilingual signage and educational workshops raise environmental consciousness among children and families, encouraging sustainable habits at home.

What makes the project beneficial to the local community:

Community Collaboration: It brings together diverse community groups, including the Forward Steps Garden Group, local families, and the Latvian diaspora school community.

Inclusive & Accessible: Located at Forward Steps Resource Centre, the space will be open and accessible to all visitors, young families, and children in Tullow.

Multicultural Learning: Trilingual signage (Irish, English, Latvian) celebrates cultural diversity while uniting the community around a shared goal of environmental stewardship.’
